Setting Financial Goals – Part 1

Setting goals is difficult enough without adding the word finance in the mix. Many people are reluctant to tackle the task of determining financial goals. Unfortunately failing to do so can have an adverse effect on achieving a comfortable lifestyle later on in life. This article helps to guide you in successfully determining financial goals that you can actually achieve.

Before setting your financial goals there are 3 simple rules that must be followed. You will first need to learn to how effectively control your day-to-day financial affairs. Consistently doing this will allow you to do the things in life that bring you satisfaction and enjoyment. This is commonly referred to as making a budget. The next requirement is to choose a course of action that you can follow to financial success. Finally you must build a financial safety net such as a personal savings account or retirement investment.

Simple Steps To Setting Financial Goals

Step 1 – Identify and write down your financial goals. This will help you visualize your dreams and desires in the form of goals. This can include saving to send your children to college, buying a new car, saving for a down payment on a house, going on vacation, paying off high interest credit card debt, or planning for your retirement.

Step 2 ? Take the time to break down your financial goals into several smaller more manageable time driven steps. These include short-term (less than 1 year), medium-term (1 to 3 years) and long-term (5 years or more) goals. Doing this simple task will make your goal setting process easier and more attainable.

Step 3 ? Educate, Educate, Educate ? Spend some time doing your research on financial topics. Read magazines and books on finance related subjects such as investing. Surf the Internet’s for investment web sites and don’t be afraid to learn about the stock market.

Step 4 ? Periodically check your progress through a self-evaluation. You’ll want to check your progress monthly, quarterly, or at any other interval you feel comfortable with, but at least semi-annually, in order to confirm that your program is working. If you’re not making a satisfactory amount of progress on a particular goal, re-evaluate your approach and make changes as necessary.

Remember there are no hard and fast rules for implementing a financial plan. It is okay to dare to dream about riches, just be realistic about what you can actually do. When you write your goals down for your visualization process you will identify any that seem unobtainable and quickly see the more realistic goals that will lead you to financial success. The important thing is to at least do something as opposed to nothing, and to start NOW.

Master Your Destiny

Do you have a goal for the future that you would love to achieve but just can’t work out how? Well, you can succeed. Believe and it will happen! How? Well read on and see. Have you heard the expression ‘ MIND OVER MATTER ‘? Do you really understand what that means? Well quite simply, your mind has two areas: the subconscious and the conscious, it is the subconscious to which the expression relates. The subconscious mind is 88% of the volume and is your ‘automatic pilot’, keeping the heart beating, lungs breathing and millions of other things that ensure that we survive. The subconscious has other powerful functions. If you allow it, it will protect you and provide solutions to problems, if the right questions are asked.

So how does it work? Very simply – the subconscious mind stores ‘things’ gathered from our senses, our experiences, our genes, and everything that we come in contact with and see. The stored ‘things’ are harmless, but useful, unless subjected to bad programming – a bit like a computer, the data will sit in the memory banks until accessed. If accessed and manipulated incorrectly then the wrong information will be displayed. Programming the mind is a learning process of clear and precise repetition. The combination of the stored things and the programming, influence our belief systems. This impacts on our confidence, or lack of, our opinions, our mannerisms, etc.

Confidence comes from: learning, practicing and belief. For example: when you first get into a car could you believe that one day you would do all the consecutive actions that you need to do to drive that car? I know I didn’t but now I don’t consciously think about driving a car – I just do it. During our lives we are subjected to many opinions and comments that repeated often enough become ‘true’. Unfortunately, it is human nature to believe the negative comments, especially about ourselves, rather than the positive ones. Let me try and explain: during my paid employment I met constantly with bosses telling me that I didn’t have the ability or the education to get the promotion I was looking for. Consequently, I had a many jobs. I developed a sense of frustration, culminating in the belief that they were right and I was wrong. However, I knew there was more to me. With my family’s support I went to university, as a mature age student. I obtained an undergraduate degree and later a post-graduate degree.

Now I have my own business as a wellness, nutrition and body shaping coach and distributor of the finest high quality nutritional and skin care products. For this change to occur I had to change my negative self-talk and beliefs about myself. The same is true for you. The negative beliefs about yourself not being able to achieve those dreams can be broken with support and guidance and with actions carried out by yourself.

It is very simple to make a decision that you want to achieve , allow yourself to believe you can do it and guess what you will do it. Just changing a few things that you do regularly will get you that goal you are aiming for:

1 How many times do you say "I Can’t!"? Well, stop yourself every time, take a deep breath, smile and say: " I CAN! "

2 How many times do you look at yourself in the mirror and don’t like what you see?

Well next time (and every time) smile and say:

" I LOOK GOOD AND I AM GOING TO LOOK BETTER!"

"EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY I AM GETTING BETTER AND BETTER"!

Your brain is a muscle too, it needs powerful nutrition – so feed it, help develop your self-belief system and cope with the coming festive season:

Are You Working Towards Success?

To some people it means driving a flash car and flashing wads of cash around to show they are doing well. To others it is spending time with their family, having achieved happiness in their life.

Your personal idea of success, and being successful will differ from someone else’s, but is very important to you. Without spending some time thinking about your success, how will you know if you are achieving it? Take some time now and think about it.

Now start working towards it, and set goals to make you successful.

Goal setting is important to your success, so you better do it right too. Here are some important things to remember about goal setting

1. break your main goal (success) into smaller ones

These small steps towards an ultimate goal are in some circles known as “eating the elephant” because you couldn’t eat the whole elephant in one go, but cutting it into bite sized chunks makes it possible to achieve a seemingly impossible task.

2. Don’t set unachievable goals- when you don’t hit them they will be a major setback.

You wouldn’t decide to climb mount Everest on your first hill walk or expect to build your own house because you have a new toolkit, so be realistic about your goals here too.

3. Write them down, and make them real, also imagine life as it will be when you have achieved each goal.

The human mind works on visualization, athletes across the world use this technique, seeing themselves in their own minds eye crossing the finish line first. They imagine how it feels, the sound of the crowds cheering etc. Then the mind can focus on making it real.

4. If you miss a goal, or deadline, take it as a minor setback not total failure, and try again.

The best analogy I’ve heard for this is of an ocean liner crossing thousands of miles of sea. On its way it may drift off course many times, but the captain will make a slight adjustment to get it on track each time. He knows its not a total failure to be slightly amiss along the way as long as you correct it and end up where you are going.

These steps will take you towards your individual success ideal, whatever it may be. You will meet adversity, and failure along the way, but take it in your stride. Always keep just your next small goal in mind and eventually you will find you have reached and even surpassed the main goal you had set, without even noticing it.

The Twin Actions of Accomplishment

When it comes to achieving accomplishments there are two foundational actions that must take place. When these two actions take place, and take place in the right order, you will become unstoppable. You will also enter into an elite group of people who actually do both.

You see, most people are given to only one or the other, and in doing so negate their opportunity to accomplish what it is that they want to accomplish.

What are these two actions?

Intake and output.

Think about it. Do you want to have a healthy body? You must take in proper food and output vigorous exercise. Do you want to be financially fit? You must intake income and output investments.

The same is true in our personal and professional lives. But what specifically do we intake and output?

We intake information and we out put effort through the exercise of our will.

The twin actions of accomplishment then are the intake of information and the exercising of our will.

As I said, most people do one or the other. They are simply information addicts or they are action addicts. You have some who go to every seminar in the world and then never exercise their will to put it into practice. Others are simply a flurry of action but going in no specific direction.

When you only intake information you become fat! Not physically fat but personally fat. You become lethargic. You become frustrated because all of this information was supposed to change your life!

When you only exercise your will and become a tornado of activity you become spent. You become tired because you aren’t achieving anything but a busy schedule!

But when you put these two together – WOW! Look out because you will turn the world upside down! So let’s look at these two a little closer.

How can you intake information?

1. Choose as close friends, people who will challenge and stimulate you intellectually and personally.

2. Go back to school.

3. Buy success products and listen to them.

4. Read books.

5. Go to a seminar.

6. Get involved in an ongoing discussion group with people who want to grow.

How can you exercise the will? This is a bit simpler but not so easy.

1. You simply must act on the information.

2. Eat better foods – put down the ice cream.

3. Save more money – stop spending on superfluous items.

4. Lose weight – start walking every day.

5. Manage your time – shut off the TV.

All of these things we know what to do, but we must simply do it.

Are you a person who has all the info? Then act. Are you a person who acts but doesn’t get anywhere? Then learn.

Intake information, exercise the will. The twin actions of accomplishment.

Working on Your Groove

We all come to a point in our lives, like in the movie "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" that we lose sight of who we are. Life has a person in so many different roles such as parent; employee and spouse we tend to lose "us" in being there for others. Although Stella got her groove back by meeting a man that was 20 years younger than her, how do we know that Stella’s groove is going to stay? Stella still had some matters in her life that she needed to clear up before taking a vacation to Jamaica Taking a vacation is a temporary fix. When you come back all the problems are still there waiting on you.

In order to start working on your groove you must first clear out the garbage that has been holding you back from being happy. When I say garbage I mean the emotional matters in your life that are holding you back from enjoying your life. If you are having a hard time forgiving someone from your past this is an emotional problem that has to be dealt with before you can move forward in your life. Holding on to the anger is like walking around with an anchor attached to your heart. Any opportunities that may come in your direction will be overlooked because you are still anchored to the past. In the book "In the Meantime" by Iyanla Vanzant she discusses how we have to start in the attic of our mind all the way to the basement of our minds.

Physical matters can also hold us back from getting our groove back. Say that you have been procrastinating on cleaning your garage. The more you think about doing it and not taking the action to do it will hold you back. In the movie, Stella was working at a job that was very profitable but the stress was overwhelming. Her dream was to build furniture and she wasn’t doing anything to make her dream a reality. Very few people realize that the things we don’t do will drain us more than the things we actually physically handle. As long as you procrastinate this brings your energy level down and eventually makes it even harder to get accomplished. Your subconscious starts accusing you of being lazy and after a while you really start to believe what your mind is telling you is true. You have to start taking baby steps to get back into action so that you will feel better about yourself. If you have a dream on hold or something you need to accomplish then take a certain amount of time either everyday or once a week to accomplish whatever it is you would like to accomplish. You will see that once this matter is complete you will feel a rush.

Once you have cleared up the garbage then it is time to work on you. Now is the time to give yourself special attention and figure out what makes you happy. During this period you would be required to do something special for self on a regular basis. I take every Thursday as my day for me. On this day I order carryout for the children and I do whatever brings me joy. If it is just reading a book, this is what I do on this day to give myself special attention.

Another thing you will have to consider is eliminating people from your life that don’t enhance your life. If you are in a relationship that you are doing more giving than receiving this may be a matter to re-evaluate. I am not speaking only on romantic relationships. This can also cover friends and family. Sometimes people have a tendency of taking your kindness for weakness. As long as you don’t set boundaries with these people they will keep on taking and not giving. You deserve better! You have to realize that you have the right to be selfish. If you don’t give yourself special attention on a "regular" basis who will? You have to learn to say no. If it is something you don’t want to do or don’t have time to do then simply say no. You don’t have to do anything in life that you truly don’t want to do except maybe pay taxes.
