Minimum Health or Maximum Health? That is the Question!

Picture yourself in one of the following scenarios.

You’re cruising along in your new car by the ocean or in the mountains near the ski lodge, or just a leisurely drive through a beautiful forest or in the country. You stop and smell the fresh air you hear the scenic sounds. You are at peace.

You’re relaxing on the patio of your new home – you see the mountains or lake in the distance. Your friends are over as you barbecue in your new back yard. Everyone loves your new home. Or you’re out on the lake in your new boat with family or friends. Feel the breeze in your face – smell the fresh scents in the air.

Picture yourself on vacation – you are on the deck of a cruise ship – you are on the top deck under the stars. You feel the warm tropic breeze in your face. The full moon is reflecting off the water as you are holding the one you love in your arms.

We analyze the lives most of us actually have and what our lives could be and the role they play!

The question is who would want only minimum health (or worse) when they could have maximum health!

Maximum health is like you feel when you ask that special someone for a date for the first time and they say yes! Minimum health is when you ask that special someone out and they tell you, that is the Saturday night when they have to do the laundry and wash their hair!

Picture maximum health as cruising next to the ocean in a sport car convertible with your lover next to you.. Picture minimum health as stuck in traffic in your 10-year-old station wagon with the air conditioner broken.

Maximum health is like being on a honeymoon on your own private beach in Hawaii. Running down the beach at night with the one you love with the warm tropic wind in your hair. The huge moon shining down on the palm trees and the tranquil bay.

Minimum health is stuck working overtime in an un-airconditioned office with a huge pile of paperwork stacked on your desk. In walks your boss – the one with all the personality of a geek with BO. He can’t stand going home to his abusive wife so he works 14 hour days and gives dirty looks to his employees when they leave before him. Your boss starts yelling about some stupid unfinished report…

Minimum health is like living paycheck to paycheck – just getting by, just barely having enough money to pay the bills each month. Minimum health is like Darling we have a little extra this month – would you like to go out to eat at McDonalds and get a Big Mac?

Maximum health is sailing away on a cruise ship to the Caribbean with the one you love while dining in elegance each evening!

Sure the above minimum health situations aren’t going to kill you (or at least not immediately), but is this the way you want to live your life? Do you really want to just scrape by when there is an option? Let’s examine the statement …aren’t going to kill you or at least not immediately.

Minimum health is simply the current absence of real illness or disease. Often people in minimum health are often too tired or sluggish to do things, they are overweight, etc. They don’t feel real bad but they sure don’t feel terrific. And what about our statement, some would argue that the above minimum health scenarios lead to premature and even a slow death!

Actually the attitude of minimum health is like too many other attitudes we have. We are always too willing to sell ourselves short. We are too willing to settle for second best even when we don’t have to. Too often this attitude can flow over into our jobs and relationships. This over the course of a lifetime can cause us much unhappiness and cost us a lot of money.

But the real issue here is minimum versus maximum health and what are we doing to strive toward maximum health? For example do you take high quality nutritional supplements or are you depending on the fast and processed foods to get all your nutrients? I would encourage you to take high quality vitamin and nutritional supplements with enzymes, antioxidants and dietary fiber along with exercise and weight management on a daily basis to strive toward maximum health.

Odd Fact or Oxymoron: Learning How To Cook Will Help You Drop a Few Pounds and Gain a Few Friends

Finding simple ways to reduce my waistline is always a personal objective. I am by no means a health expert, and I have not always been too concerned with what I put into my body. But as I get a little older, I fear that if I don’t concern myself with health, my doctor will have to. And regardless of the good that they do, I don’t like doctors and clinics that much.

I do a lot of my own research, and the internet has been a blessing. What I have learned in my research and life experience is that the crap that I used to eat made me fat. I could tell you that fast food, chips, and beer are bad for you, but you know that.

The information I have to share may be more important than that. It’s about the rewards of cooking. There are many, and they are easy to attain. You might find some of them to be true in your life as well.

1. Working with your hands. I love working with my hands, and I don’t get to that often. Cooking has become somewhat of an art to me. I appreciate working with the food and manipulating it in my favor.

2. Solace. Many people will not bother you in the kitchen and you will be able to forget what has happened during your hectic day. It is a time to have a glass of wine and appreciate what the earth has provided for you.

3. Family and friends. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy cooking for our friends. We come from opposite corners of the country and have wonderful contrasting tastes to share. It beats sitting in front of the television waiting for the microwave to finish. Surrounding yourself with good people and sharing meals with them is an amazing stress reliever.

4. Taste. They say that it always tastes better when somebody else does the cooking. I disagree. I know what I like, and I cook what I like. Sure it is nice to enjoy the cooking of others on occasion, but I don’t mind the task.

5. Healthy, healthy, healthy. Since I discovered more departments of the grocery store, I have started to eat better. It helps that my interests in cooking have expanded. Meals I enjoy now, I would have never tried in the past. I began shopping at a whole foods market, and stay away from processed foods. In a couple of weeks, I lost fifteen pounds with no change in my exercise routine. Funny what the food manufactures put in ready-to-eat foods.

My secrets are no secrets at all. People cooked for many years before the creation of fast food and take-home dinners. Sometimes with our limited time to eat the very best, but eat the very best when you have time. Don’t feel guilty when you eat something you shouldn’t. It will only make you feel bad, nothing else. But take pride in your body: get a good night’s sleep, do some exercises that you are comfortable performing, and take a cooking class. Life will become less stressful and you might find some tasty healthy dishes to share with your friends.

Omega 3 Fat is Good for Your Heart and for Your Brain

Scandinavian fishermen are a healthy bunch. It had long been known that they live longer and have much less heart and blood-pressure related diseases than their European counterparts.

Their diet of cold-water fish, while not known for variety or sophistication, had been suspected to fortify their health. Now the scientific research gives additional credit to this claim.

Eating fish high in fats like sardines and salmon might help to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Such fish contains Omega 3 fatty acids, and those acids prevent build-up of amyloid in a brain. Those are results of the research study published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

In this study, researchers from the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at UCLA observed two groups of older mice that had been genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer’s disease. They fed one group food that was fortified with docosahexenoic acid (DHA), the Omega-3 fatty acid found in several types of cold-water fish, and they fed the other group a diet low in DHA.

After five months, the brains of mice who were fed the DHA-rich diet had 70 percent less build-up of amyloid, a waxy deposit of protein and polysaccharides in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s. More work is needed to determine if Omega-3 fatty acids can prevent a similar build-up in human brains.

The scientists are very optimistic on this subject. Their research had shown that eating Omega-3 fatty acids also has protective effect on human hearts tissues.

While the research is still in its preliminary stages, FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has already decided to allow the following qualified health claim on foods containing Omega-3 acids: “Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.”

What does it mean to you? It is well known that the damages to your heart and brain tissues don’t start in the advanced age. They are built up slowly over many years. So the sooner you start changing your diet away from those fat read meats, the better health you will enjoy in your later years.

There is something else we can learn from those Scandinavian fishermen – they seldom cook their fat fish over high temperatures. They learned from a long experience that a high-temperature cooking destroys many valuable nutrients.

They also developed many ingenuous techniques for cold-smoking their fish. This is a process, in which fish is being salted first, and then subjected to a very low heat over extended period of time. If you are feeling adventurous, you can learn to do the same. The taste is delicious.

What Colors Are on Your Plate?

Can the colors on your plate tell you what health benefits you are getting?

As researchers are learning more and more about the foods we eat there is one hot topic that keeps coming up?.phytochemicals. You may have heard the latest craze for lycopene found in tomato products boasting its heart health benefits. Phytochemicals are biologically active chemicals (not classified as vitamins or minerals) found in foods that our bodies may use as part of their disease-fighting arsenal. A single tomato or orange contains, hundreds, and possibly thousands, of phytochemicals. This is very exciting news for researchers since many of these phytochemicals act as antioxidants and also provide other benefits for cancer prevention. They have also found that the color of the edible part of our fruits and vegetables can tell us what class of phytochemicals it contains and therefore, what health benefits we can obtain. Finally! Now when your mother says eat your vegetables, their good for you? we can see how they are good for us!

Stress and Aging – Human Growth Hormones

Modern life can be stressful. There are so many concerns that you have to worry about like work, family, relations, and other activities. Sometimes you have to juggle or walk on a tightrope of schedules, deadlines, meetings, and extracurricular activities.

Usually, when you are stressed, your heart speeds up and your head pounds. What actually happens is that your pituitary gland releases a certain hormone, which in turn triggers your adrenal glands to release stress hormones (i.e., cortisol and adrenaline) into your bloodstream. As a result, several of your body’s systems are upset.

You may likely feel a stomachache coming or experience diarrhea when you’re stressed out. You also tend to feel hunger pangs resulting to weight gain. Stress also makes you susceptible to sickness like colds and other infections in addition to skin problems, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and loss of sex drive.

Stress also likely speeds up aging. According to a study done by the doctors in University of California at San Francisco, chronically stressed women displayed chromosomal changes characteristic of increased aging. They found out that the telomeres (found at the ends of the chromosomes) of these women tend to be shorter than the less-stressed women. Telomeres shorten as we age; thereby the length of the telomeres is an indication of aging. When telomeres cannot be possibly any shorter, they die out which is evident in skin wrinkles, organ failure, etc.

That’s why you need to lower the level of stress in your life. You can do that by taking care of your body and leading a healthy lifestyle. Have a balanced diet, adequate rest, and regular exercise. Relax and learn to enjoy your life. Take up a hobby that will help you take your mind off things like reading, knitting, collecting stamps, playing sports, or gardening. Join a club, support group or organization where you can meet other people with the same interests. Try joining the community play, take up dancing classes and acting workshops, help in local charities or fund raisers. Who knows you might even discover your hidden talents?

Learn deep-breathing exercises and practice meditation or Yoga. Visit the gym regularly or join a fitness group that will help you stay fit and healthy. Another option is to have massages and rub downs. This will help loosen up your muscles and calm your nerves.

At times, you just have to be positive about things and be less negative or pessimistic. Try to smile at people you meet on the streets, watch a movie or a play, have a new hairdo, change your wardrobe, and have the time to smell the roses.

Another good practice is having your regular medical check-ups to ensure your good health every time. Sometimes, when your level of stress is remarkably high, you need to get help. Seek out the support of friends and family, change jobs, re-prioritize your life, or consult with a psychologist, psychiatrist, or social worker.

Life can really be full of challenges. Learn how to cope up and remember to always look at the bright side of life. If you feel that stress is getting the better of you, don’t hesitate to seek help. A stress-free life can definitely add up to your years.
