The Power of Thankfulness and Vice Versa

We are soon to celebrate once again the National Holiday known as “Thanksgiving.”

We do this every year. Every year we gather together with friends and family for a feast of plenty and, hopefully pause to give thanks for all our bountiful blessings. But thanksgiving should not be relegated to only one day a year. In Psalm 107, it says over and over again, “Oh that men would give praise the Lord for His goodness?” We should be thankful every day for the blessings God has given us.

By giving thanks, we acknowledge God as a power greater than ourselves. We can see the handiwork of the creator around us in many ways every day. As Paul puts it in Romans 1:20 “the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by things that are made?” And yet, some of us fail to acknowledge Him. If all we were left to was our own selves and our own abilities, we would be quite limited indeed. Human beings are finite and limited, but God is infinite and unlimited. He has endowed all of us with special talents and abilities, but we must admit that these are from Him, and that they, although wonderful, are limited. The only being with unlimited power and resources is God. By being thankful, we acknowledge His sovergin control over our lives and His power to change situations and give us more power and ability. To be unthankful to Him is limit our own potential even further than it already is, while to be thankful can cause an expansion of our abilities.

To fail to be thankful to God is to be asked to be left to be on our own–to be forced to depend on our own limited abilities and resources. In the moral realm, this spells absolute disaster. Lack of thankfulness is actually what has caused many of the problems we face today. This is what Paul was talking about in the first chapter of Romans in the Bible. He says “Because when they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God, nor gave thanks to Him?Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts?for the degrading of their bodies with one another?.” I challenge you to read this entire portion in your Bible, and you will see that the spread of sin and degradation in the world is a direct result of unthankfulness toward God. Unthankfulness toward God led to the degradation of man, who was made in God’s image. Think about it. An unthankful person opens himself up to all sorts of passions and desires, no matter how perverse. Unthankfullness removes the restraining hand of God over us and leaves us to our own wichod and perverse bents. Thus, an unthankful attitude is the first step on a dangerous downward spiral. This is true both individually and nationally.

The trouble is that none of us naturally wants to acknowledge a higher power than ourselves, because then we must yield to that power. But what we fail to realize is that yielding to God is the only true freedom. And when we acknowledge Him and begin to be thankful to Him for His many blessings, He will start to bless us more and to show us, if we do not yet know, what is the true way of eternal salvation which He has provided for us. It’s no secret, really, and involves another act of thankfulness on our part, that of thankfully accepting the gift which God has provided for us (see Romans 6:23.)

On the positive side, the more we are thankful for the blessings we have, the more blessings we will receive. Paul tells us in Philippians 4:6 that our prayers should be “with thanksgiving.” If we have a problem, we should trust in the promises of God and praise Him for the answer to come.

The first Thanksgiving day happened as a result of the Pilgrams’ thankfulness for a bountiful harvest. But they had just passed through a very hard winter. The cold, snow and sleet was exceptionally heavy, interfering with the workers as they tried to construct their settlement. Yet, it is certain that they did not loose heart, but gave thanks even then for the chance they had to begin a new life in the new world. And God honored their faith and thankfulnes with bountiful harvest, which gave them more reason for thankfulness. And God continued to bless them.

Our country was founded upon faith in God. And this is the reason for this holiday we call “Thanksgiving.” But we are moving dangerously away from our foundation. It’s high time we took this day not just as an excuse to get together with family and friends and stuff ourselves, but as a reminder of the attitude of thankfulness which should be ours every day of the year.

What Kingdom Are You Looking For?

The awe inspiring chapters in Hebrews which we have fondly labeled the Hall of Faith tells a wonderful tale of past history all for our encouragement and edification.

Hebrews 11: 13- 16, quotes …”These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. Verse 14 … for they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. Verse 15 … And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. Verse 16 … But now they desire a better country, that is a heavenly: wherefore YaHWeH (God) is not ashamed to be called their Elohim (God): for he hath prepared for them a city.”

Here we have just touched upon the most awe inspiring subject that stirs the Spirit to take a big leap of faith and look forward to our next dwelling place. These verses in Hebrews point directly to the “new city” that we will soon occupy. It is called the New Jerusalem. A very thought provoking and extended view of the New Jerusalem can be found in the book of Revelations. I know Bible scholars and teachers have made many great dissertations regarding this subject. But, if you will ponder this one thought out of all of them. A very simple, yet profoundly earth shattering thought that can have an explosive impact upon your Christian life right now.

WHAT KINGDOM ARE YOU LOOKING AT ? YES, YOU RIGHT NOW ? YES, ME RIGHT NOW ?

It has seemed like the frantic pace of our technological ‘chip’ society has propelled even the ‘Christian World’ into a frenzy of convoluted activities. How can our minds be stayed upon YaHWeH (God)? How can we keep from not being swept along with the currents of our own well organized Christian life with ALL these terrific influences pulling us this way and that way. This earthly domain takes a toll upon our souls and we suffer in some of its consequences. At times so burdensomely caught up in keeping up, that our possessions and needs outweigh our spiritual treasures being stored for us in heaven.

The only possible answer lies in seeking THE answer. This is not any quick solution, yet once revealed it is just that quick! If you really, really, desire to catch a glimpse of the New Jerusalem, our YaHWeH (God) is faithful. If you really, really, desire an answer, He will answer in His own defined way just for you! Until we are secure (and might I add ‘secured’) in our ‘walk of faith’ we will continue to stumble blindly at times. Until, we have poured out our soul’s ambitions and submitted to the ‘higher calling’ we will continue to run as if to escape. But, the only place we will eventually run to, is into YaHWeH’s arms once again. Our very breath will be undone, without His Breath of Life flowing into us second by second.

Oh, the wonder of this New City! This City of Perpetual Light. The City of our YaHWeH (God). The dwelling place of our Yahshua (Jesus). Our Home Sweet Home. Oh, the shining beauty and majesty that emanates from His Throne. Our emancipation awaits as our soul delight as it comes into view. Catch a glimpse and allow your soul to dwell a moment in its glory. Catch a glimpse and allow your spirit to soar to its new heights. Yes to the New City. The City of hope and pure righteousness. The City of beautiful peace. The City where all tears and earthly toils disappear. The City where all sickness and troubles flee away. The City created for you and me! The City called the New Jerusalem.

Let Her Be Covered Part One

Several weeks ago, while shopping in a grocery store, my wife was approached by a woman who appeared to be very refined — very courteous manner. She indicated that she had a question that possibly she could answer. She and her husband had observed that some women wear coverings similar to the one that my wife was wearing. Why are they worn? Her husband’s opinion was that it signifies marriage. She herself did not concur with that opinion. But why DO you wear it? That was her question. In response, my companion assured her that the wearing of the headcovering is a Biblical teaching recorded in 1 Corinthians 11. To her that was news. She seemingly was not aware that this was a Bible teaching, and with gratitude in her voice, she promised to go home and read for herself from 1 Corinthians 11.

A hundred years ago, an occurrence like that here in Lebanon county would have been unlikely. Why? Because a hundred years ago, this practice was still being observed in numerous non-Mennonite circles. The widespread loss of this practice demonstrates what can happen in no more than a hundred years. Whether that woman was a church member or not, I don’t know. I do know that today, in many church circles, this teaching is either omitted, or explained away, or twisted so as to make the hair the only needed covering.

But, it’s not my primary calling to condemn other church groups. Right within our own circles we have a big enough job to keep this practice alive and to keep it moving in the right direction. In order to get that job done requires giving periodic attention to this teaching. That’s why I’ve chosen to dwell on that subject this morning. My record shows that it’s been a little over 5 years ago that I devoted an entire message to this subject. That’s a pretty long interval ? maybe too long.

I’ve already named the Bible passage in which this teaching is found, so let’s turn in our Bibles to 1 Corinthians chapter 11. The content of this chapter revolves around 2 items: the headcovering, and the Lord’s supper. Because of their nature, we believe that they both fall in the category of an "ordinance". This is in agreement with the language of verse 2: "Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you."

The now-popular approach to this chapter throws away the first of these practices, the headcovering, but retains the second, the Lord’s supper. In my opinion, there is no valid ground for that kind of selectivity. Nonetheless, it’s being done. And that’s one reason why there are people around us like that lady who approached my wife.

In a few moments, I’m going to be reading 1 Corinthians 11:4, 5 and 6. Those verses serve as home base for both the doctrine and the practice of the headcovering. But all of the first 16 verses relate to the subject in one way or another. All right, let’s listen now to verses 4-6:

"(4) Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. (5) But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. (6) For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered."

Those last four words in verse 6 are my text: "Let her be covered."

That is a straightforward command. It’s comparable to other commands that are stated in a similar way. "Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body." "Let no man deceive you." "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers." "Let your light so shine." Now the command in view here is no less binding than these other commands.

No Word Yet on Pedophiles With New Catholic Pope

The new Pope is not expected to break ranks with his fellow Cardinals or Army of Priests any time soon and come clean on the issues of child molestation and pedophilia. We all know and it is no secret that Catholic Priests around the world are pedophiles and child molesters. Not all but enough to be alarming as the problems are so wide spread it might be safer to take your kids and drop them off for the weekend at ‘Never Neverland Ranch’ then to leave them alone with the local Priest. Some argue and defend the church others know these things have been going on for over two thousand years.

In the United States we will shut down a school, day care center at the drop of a hat if there are even widespread rumors of such activity. Yet, the Catholic Church under the leadership of Cardinal Law simply moved the pedophile and homosexual phenophile (adolescent molestation) Priests around from perish to perish. We also know that this activity to this day goes on in the United States although the real problem is across the Globe as the Catholic Church has its fingers on every continent. Will the new Pope, Benedict XVI, come out with a statement against this common practice and method of operation of the Catholic Priests around the world? Can the Catholic Church afford to lose that many Priests; if so who will run the Church. No one seems to want to come out about the issue or make a statement on it.

Some say the Benedict XVI is a traitor to the parishioners of the Catholic Church if he does not come out with a statement against pedophilia, while others think he may have been involved is such pedophile activity himself between his stint with the Nazi Party "Hitler Youth" and his name change to Benedict the XVI. Many Cardinals say that he was chosen because he was dear friends with the last Pope. Many parishioners believe he was chosen because he was the only cardinal with a clean record since there are no living parties able or willing to come forward with accusations or proof of molestation charges.

Many Hispanic and Black Americans are upset that a Hispanic or Black Pope was not chosen, some feel slighted and are planning on leaving the Church. Was the choice made because maybe some of the other cardinals of ethnic decent had checkered pasts or some molestation charges might be mentioned furthering the Catholic Church’s public relations nightmare? Many want to know why such able Cardinals were skipped over and what they had done wrong in their past to get the "NO" vote. Still others are waiting to see if this new Pope will come clean on the molestation charges against the church. How do you feel about your children being molested by the Catholic Church?

Imagine

Some people imagine what glory will behold them at the end of this age, others wonder what it will be like to be like Jesus Christ. Well let’s see what the Bible says about this. Look at Colossians 1:15 it says He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities, all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Look at Ephesians 1:9 it says And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment-to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession-to the praise of his glory.

Now look at verse 18 it says I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fill everything in every way.

Look at Ephesians 3:20 it says Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. What a Blessing to know that the One who is the most powerful is at work within us, and that His strength is in us who believe. WOW what a Blessing!!!

Now look at Romans 2:11 it says For God does not show favoritism. All who sin apart for the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

Look at Romans 16:25 it says Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him-to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

In closing look at Colossians 1:25 it says I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness-the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
